DESTINATION OF THE MONTH: Caribbean Coast of Colombia

ABOUT COLOMBIA

Colombia is located in the northwestern region of South America, has many unique landscapes, so it is the perfect destination to visit. Colombia has toweing mountains, quaint villages, castles, famous squares, as well as other places where you can enjoy excellent cuisine and meet friendly local people.

This country has a priveledged geographical position, since it is the gateway to South America. For this reason, there are more than 900 weekly international flights into the country. Additionally, it has a variety of climates and destinations that meed the needs of both adults and children alike. 

 

CULTURE

Colombia is a culturally rich country; its gastronomy, music, art and folkore make it a unique place. Also, kindness and excellent service are of the most important qualities for Colombians.

In this country, food is a true act of love, with cuisine that is as diverse as its climate, flora and fauna. Thanks to its fertile land, Colombia has the privelege of being able to cultivate a huge variety of fruits and vegetables, among many other things. Ajiaco Santafereño, Bandeja Paisa, Roast Cuy, Picada Costeña, Sobrebarriga and chicken stew over some of the favorite Colombian dishes.

Furthermore, in Colombia you will hear music everywhere. Vallenato, Salsa, Champeta, Spanish Rock, Tropipop, Cumbias, Guabinas and Corridors are some of the most popular musical genres. If you are a music lover, you can enjoy the Classical Music Festival in Cartagena, Vallenato Festival, Rock and Jazz al Parque, Estereo Picnic Music and many more. 

There are also prominent local artists that exemplify the culture. Painters, sculptures, photographers and artisans that exhibit their work around the country, in locations such as ArtBo, Botero Museum, the Museum of Art of Bogota. 

Finally, it is well-known that Colombia is a joyful country where parties and carnivals are part of the people's heritage. If you go during the holiday season between December and January, you will encounter many seasonal traditions. Alternatively, you can enjoy music, parades, dancing and food at the carnivals in Cali, Manizales and Barranquilla. 

 

TRAVEL IN THE CARIBBEAN REGION

Places such as Bogota, Medellin and Cali are common tourist spots for foreigners. However, the Caribbean Coast is a lesser-known destination that will surely amaze you.

Begin your trip by arriving in Bogota, later cathing a short flight to the walled city of Cartagena. This city is full of romanticism, with excellent restaurants and hotels that offer an unforgettable experience. 

In this city, you can sip a cocktail in the bastions of the walled city, enjoy a ride in a "Coche", buy artisonal products, marvel at the sculptures of the Colombia artist Fernando Botero and explore the beaches of the Buru and Rosario Islands. 

After Cartagena, you can go by car or plane to the city of Santa Marta and enjoy the beautiful beaches of Playa Blanca, Palomino and Tayrona. You can also embark on an ecological walk with indigenous Kogi, Wiwa and Arhuaco to the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, which lasts three days. This is one of the most spiritual places in Colombia and the natives have been living there for hundreds of years. In this place, you can connect with the ancestral indigenous culture, which prioritizes spirituality and clean energies, or experience their unique rituals. 

To finish, you can fly to Riohacha from Santa Marta or go by car to Cabo de la Vela located in the department of La Guaijra, whihch is a desert that is mostly inhabitated by the Wayuu indigenous people. A 4x4 truck is required if you wish to travel to Cape La Vela, this service can easily be provided by one of the transport operators in Riohacha. The journey begins at 8:00 am, returning the next day in the afternoon, although you can stay longer. The trip will take you to the craft center in Uribía, then to Manaure to visit the salt flats famed for their large piles of salt, which provide employement for the Wayuu and end up at the Cerrejon Mine. 

Lastly, you can fly back to Bogota, having had an unforgettable experience that you will remember for a lifetime.
