In 2012, Haiti announced its intention to seek associate membership status in the African Union. Haiti is the only predominantly Francophone independent nation in the Americas. It is one of the only two independent nations in the Americas (along with Canada) to designate French as an official language.

Haiti is on the western part of Hispaniola, sharing border with the Dominican Republic. Haiti is located 83 km (52 mi) from Cuba .

Haiti has a warm, humid tropical climate. Average temperatures range from the high 70s (25 Celsius) in January and February to the mid-80s (30 Celsius) in July and August. In winter, frost can occur at high elevations. Climate temperatures are modified by elevation.
