Haiti is unique for several reasons. It was the first independent nation of Latin America and the Caribbean, the first black-led republic in the world, and the second republic in the Americas to gain independence in 1804 as part of a successful slave revolution lasting nearly a decade. In 2012, Haiti announced its intention to seek associate membership status in the African Union. Haiti is the only predominantly Francophone independent nation in the Americas. It is one of the only two independent nations in the Americas (along with Canada) to designate French as an official language. 

Location
Haiti is on the western part of Hispaniola, sharing border with the Dominican Republic. Haiti is located 83 km (52 mi) from Cuba .
 

Climate 
Haiti has a warm, humid tropical climate. Average temperatures range from the high 70s (25 Celsius) in January and February to the mid-80s (30 Celsius) in July and August. In winter, frost can occur at high elevations. Climate temperatures are modified by elevation.
